Erik Desimpelaere (*Kortrijk 1990, June 28th) had his first musical education at the local school of music in Harelbeke, where he studied piano (with Lieve Clement) and took courses of music theory, music history and jazz. He also studied flute at the local school of music in Waregem, with Veerle Secember.  He obtained a Master Diploma of Piano at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in the class of Piet Kuijken and a Master Diploma of Composition at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in the class of Wim Henderickx and Luc Van Hove. He currently studies Orchestral Conducting at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Ed Spanjaard and Lucas Vis.
In september 2015, Erik became chief conductor of the 'Symphony Orchestra of Kortrijk' (B), since January 2016 he is also chief-conductor of the Royal Symphonic Wind Band Vooruit Harelbeke (B).  During the summer of 2016 he was assistant conductor with the Dutch National Opera Academy (NL).
Astria Oboe Trio (formed in 2009) are three oboe players united by are shared passion. Eric Speller, Yf Bourry and Dimitri Mestdag, who have a great many national and international awards to their credit, perform an astonishingly varied repertoire that extends from the Renaissance period to the present day.
Their unique richness of sound, created by a combination of oboe, oboe d’amore and cor anglais, offers countless shades of sound and is an abinding source of inspiration for contemporary composers.
Astria often joins forces with other musicians and artists from other disciplines.
They created a Bach-Reich project together with Akt-Tek percussion duo, a theater performance around the First World War and a children’s play with music of Erik Desimpelaere based on fairy tales of Godfried Bomans.
The trio has toured with great succes in France, Spain and Bulgaria.
Astria organises its double-reed festival every two years with masterclasses and concerts.
Astria released three cd’s (“Patchwork”, “Variations” and “Impressions”).
