"Changing Lights"
pour hautbois solo

Bruno Siberchicot studied violin and viola in Bordeaux. He subsequently improved his viola techniques with Jean-François Bénatar in Paris and Kato Havas in Oxford. Later he turned to composition, while working on a PhD in science, studying first with Henri Pauly-Laubry, then continuing with Eric Tanguy and Edith Canat de Chizy. Noticed by Betsy Jolas, in 2003 Siberchicot received a grant from the Académie Internationale de Villecroze. His first significant orchestral work, Sleeping Shadows, was performed under Jean-Michel Ferran in Paris in 2005. He has received commissions from Quintette de Bretagne (wind quintet), ensemble Trielen (woodwind trio) and for the "Concours National des Jeunes AltistesÔÇØ (viola solo), as well as from a number of soloists.

His works are published by IMD-Arpèges in Paris and by Egge-Verlag in Koblenz.  

Changing Lights

 Four pieces for solo oboe

The oboe is a colourful instrument with a wealth of different sonorities. Each of my four pieces presents a different aspect – that is, light - of this colour. Each one is based on a specific sound effect. The first one is a recitative with a melodic line unaccompanied by multiphonics. Trills colour the second piece, while the third piece uses timbre fingerings for the same tone, ranging from duller to brighter sounds.  The last piece exploits the virtuosity of this instrument trough metric modulations.

 Changing Lights, were created by Marjolein Koenig during the last Gaudeamus Music Week in Muziekgebouw aan't IJ, Amsterdam (2007). It was then played in Institut Néerlandais de Paris (oboe: Arco van Zon) and in Arturo Rando Concert Hall in Las Vegas (oboe: Stephen Kaplan).

 Le hautbois est un instrument qui possède une grande richesse de couleurs. Chacune des quatre pièces de Changing Lights présente un aspect - un éclairage - différent de ces couleurs.

La première pièce est un récitatif dont la ligne mélodique est accompagnée par des sons multiphoniques.

La seconde est colorée par des trilles.

La troisième utilise des doigtés timbrants qui permettent sur une même note de varier le timbre, du sombre au clair.

Enfin la dernière exploite la virtuosité de l'instrument.

 Dans le but de varier encore plus les couleurs, j'ai réalisé une version pour cor anglais ainsi que pour hautbois-baryton.

Changing Lights a été crée au Musiekgebouw d'Amsterdam par Marjolein Koenig lors de la semainede création Gaudeamus 2007 (04/09/07).
Sélectionnée pour le cinquantenaire de l'Institut Néerlandais de Paris, elle y a été interprétée par Arco van Zon en septembre 2007.
La création américaine a eu lieu le 3 février 2008 au Arturo Rando Concert Hall de Las Vegas (hautbois : Stephen Kaplan).
